Every Journey Begins with One Small Step

In 2015, I had the honor of running for City Council here in Charlotte, North Carolina. Along the way I met great people and learned a lot about our community, the great things and the thing we need to work on. There were two events during the campaign that motivated me to start a new journey.  The first was an invitation to speak to entrepreneurs and investors at a Charlotte start-up co-working facility. It made me think about the red tape and struggles those with great ideas must navigate to start their own journey into entrepreneurship.   Our economy, and our status as an innovative nations depends largely on those that can start with nothing and build a company do it in the face of headwinds from government bureaucracies.  The second was a meeting with women small business owners. You could not be in that room without feeling the energy, excitement, and camaraderie of these business owners. I was amazed at the breadth and diversity of companies that started with an idea and had been brought to life by these inspiring women.   In the end, I did not win the election, but those two moments on the campaign trail […]
